A few weeks before the artist's terrible passing, he painted this piece at the height of his prolific output. After his voluntary stay at the institution in Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh left Provence in May 1890. North of Paris, in Auvers-sur-Oise, he relocated. Here, Van Gogh lets psychological forces transform the surrounding landscape. Old images still show the serene thatched cottages, which appear to have been lifted by a solid telluric force that dilated them.
