Less than a year before his passing, in October 1889, Van Gogh painted The Mulberry Tree in Autumn. It was created during highs and lows, painted while he was extraordinarily self-aware but in a chaotic environment, like most of his artwork. The Mulberry Tree depicts a tree from the asylum's garden. It sprouts from a rocky mountainside in the centre of the painting—the ground is painted with brisk brushstrokes of white and light brown.
