Van Gogh completed Autumn Landscape in October 1885, and the following month he journeyed from Nuenen to Antwerp. By this time, the locals of Nuenen had shunned him because they thought he was to blame for a peasant girl's illegitimate pregnancy, and the local clergy had warned people to avoid him. He was consequently out of models to paint and moved to still life and landscape paintings.
